“Delete the wife” is one of my favorite quotes from Kathryn Janeway, referencing not her position as captain, but what little personal life she was able to have while stranded 70,000 light years from home. Recreation time, as well as personal connection, needed to happen in less than conventional means.
As a result you have Fair Haven, the fictional location within a fictional show, where the crew can let loose for a while to explore a world that is safe (well, unless the holodeck goes on the fritz...again) from the unknown dangers of the Delta Quadrant.A place where Kathryn can find companionship that doesn’t risk improper dynamics with her crew.
If the Federation had a Holodeck Travel Bureau, they would need advertising posters, wouldn’t you think? My inspiration for the style of the poster was not only the mid-century travel posters of international airlines, but also the shin-hanga woodblock prints of Hiroshi Yoshida and vintage art deco Italian aperitif posters. Throw that all together with the gorgeous sets imagined by the production department and you get my painting.
This started as an original ink drawing, then watercolor was added, and after that it was cut and reapplied to a base watercolor "mat" of stripes reminiscent of the colors used on screen. The image floats on top of the striped mat adding depth and interest.
Remarques available in other sizes upon request. A remarque is also an original watercolor, but it starts from an archivally printed copy of the original ink drawing, saving time and allowing original art at a more affordable price. Please contact me if you are interested in one for yourself!
